the politics of poetry

April 14, 2008

In Britain, the Queen’s English Society says it’s fed up with modern poetry. These unofficial guardians of the English language say it’s not a poem if it doesn’t have rhyme or meter. That’s a hard argument to make. But at our morning editorial meeting it seemed a good excuse to hear some examples of poetry as it relates to foreign affairs. This story aired today on PRI’s The World.

  1. Hi Alex,

To say I was shocked to see your comment on my blog is an understatement. I would be glad to put a link to “The World” in my post as well as a link to your personal blog. I appreciate all the work that I am sure goes into producing a show like “The World.” I am a little embarrassed of my shoddy writing skills and I hope you won’t judge me too harshly. It has been a long time since I have written anything with form. I stay at home with my children here in Southern California. My daughter was born with a lot of health and developmental problems and my whole life has become a blur of appointments, therapy sessions, procedures, and tests. I could have never imagined my life only extending to the 10 square miles around my house. Listening to “The World” has helped me to stay connected to, well, the world. It is also a reminder that some have it harder than I do, and that the human spirit overcoming hardship and suffering is a universal truth. I think that is what touched me about Cecil Rajendra’s life. I thank you for sharing that with your audience. I am also glad that you gave me a new outlook on art of writing and reading poetry. I am not sure why I have never really enjoyed poetry, especially since I was a Speech Pathology major.

OK, this has gone on long enough. Thanks for the comment, I will gladly give you “props” on my blog. Please keep producing your wonderful show. It makes a difference in my life and keeps me from feeling like I have “mommy brain” (that’s where you are so tired that you hand your son a snack of cat food instead of gold fish crackers).
